LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR APPROACH TO LAKE MANAGEMENT

Our Full Service Lake Management approach is designed to address the root causes of eutrophication, not just the symptoms.

Rather than relying on short-term cosmetic fixes like herbicides and algaecides, which actually worsen the problem in the long run, our remediation programs target the key root cause factors contributing to your lake’s health.

OUR FOUR KEY PRINCIPLES GUIDE EVERYTHING WE DO

1. Simplify the Science:

We make sure that everyone in your community understands the Lake Management Action Plan and its objectives.

2. Measure What Matters:

We focus on collecting relevant data that provides insight into the root causes of eutrophication, allowing us to design effective solutions and track progress.

3. Customize the Remediation Plan:

Every lake is unique, and so is every solution we develop. We create custom programs that cater to your water body’s specific condition and needs.

LAKE MANAGEMENT ACTION PLAN

Our Lake Management Action Plans are developed in complete alignment with the recommendations of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) report GAO-22-104449.

This report highlighted fundamental flaws with conventional lake management practices and treatments, like the use of chemical treatments such as algaecides, and emphasized the need for system-level solutions that address the root causes of lake eutrophication.

Our approach focuses on the key issues identified in the GAO report:

1. Hypoxia: Low oxygen conditions in water and sediment disrupt natural nutrient cycling and food webs. We prioritize eliminating hypoxia, especially in bottom waters and sediment, to restore the lake’s ecological balance.

2. Sediment Nutrient Recycling: The accumulation of nutrient-rich organic sediments recycles phosphorus and nitrogen, fueling algal blooms. Our plans target reducing sediment nutrient recycling as a key strategy for long-term lake health.

3. Food Web Dysfunction: Hypoxia can lead to the loss of zooplankton, benthic fauna, and other grazers, allowing excessive algal growth. We work to restore grazer food webs, promoting a balanced ecosystem that naturally controls algal populations.

4. Avoiding Short-term Fixes: While treatments like algaecides may provide temporary relief, they can worsen the problem in the long run by increasing nutrient-rich sediments. Our focus is on sustainable, long-term solutions that address the underlying causes of lake degradation.

The GAO report serves as the governing framework for every aspect of our Lake Management Action Plan:

  • Solution Design: We collect comprehensive information about your lake’s specific conditions to develop a tailored solution that addresses your lake’s unique status and needs.
  • Management Goals and Objectives: We set clear, measurable goals and objectives that target the root causes of eutrophication, as outlined in the GAO report.
  • Management Strategies: We adopt proven, sustainable management strategies that focus on eliminating hypoxia, reducing sediment nutrient recycling, restoring food web dynamics, and avoiding short-term fixes that may cause long-term harm

  • Performance Measurement: We collect relevant data to track progress towards our management objectives, ensuring that our efforts are making a meaningful difference in your lake’s health.
  • Annual Lake Management Report: Our transparent, easy-to-understand annual reports provide a comprehensive overview of your lake’s progress, highlighting the data and information that matters most to you and your community.

By aligning our Lake Management Action Plans with the GAO report recommendations, we ensure that our approach is grounded in sound science and proven strategies for long-term lake health.

Our goal is to work hand in hand with your community to restore your lake’s ecological balance, preserve its natural beauty, and protect the cherished Lake Lifestyle for generations to come.

SOLUTION DESIGN

Our comprehensive multi-level solution design approach addresses the key root cause
mechanisms identified by the GAO in their 2022 report on managing Hypoxia and Harmful Algae Blooms.

1. Oxygenation:

Every water body needs to be fully oxygenated throughout the water column for optimal health.

Our RADOR oxygenation technology has successfully achieved this around the world in water bodies of thousands of acres and hundreds of feet deep. We don’t use off-the-shelf kits; instead, we custom design every system for each project, ensuring that the solution is tailored to each lake’s specific needs.

2. Bio-Dredging Sediment Nutrient Stockpiles:

Eutrophication is sustained and intensified by recycling of sediment nutrient stockpiles.

We use sophisticated enzyme formulations that Bio-Dredge accumulated organic sediment away, depleting these nutrient stockpiles and depriving invasive weeds of the mucky rooting bed that they take advantage of.

Restoring Food Web Biodiversity and Function:

A healthy lake ecosystem relies on a diverse and functional food web. Our bioaugmentation programs include techniques to stimulate the foundation levels of the food web, breaking nutrient recycling and restoring nutrient clearance via the food web.

By promoting biodiversity and supporting the natural processes that keep lakes in balance, we help create a self-sustaining ecosystem that can better withstand future challenges.

SOLUTION DELIVERY

At Clean-Flo International, our Solution Delivery process encompasses two main aspects: Engineering (the “hardware”) and Biological Management of Remediation (the “software”).

By addressing both the physical and biological components of lake health, we provide a comprehensive approach to restoring your lake’s ecological balance.

1. Engineering

Design, Installation & Commissioning: Our engineering team will custom design and configure a RADOR oxygenation system specifically for your lake to ensure full oxygenation at all times.

When required, we incorporate realtime monitoring of our hardware and equipment, and we can also incorporate automated dosing of certain bio-augmentation programs for your lake.

RADOR systems are installed with GPS precision, and pressurization and balancing of airflow is completed during the commissioning process, ensuring optimal performance from day one.

Service & Maintenance: We provide full service and maintenance to ensure the longevity of the equipment (we have many systems that have been running for well over a decade).

As your lake’s remediation program progresses, we also adjust and re-optimize system configuration and settings in line with changes and improvements to the water body and its bathymetric profile.

This adaptive approach ensures that your lake continues to receive the best possible care throughout the remediation process.

2. Biological Management of Remediation

tech with lab water samplesOur Lake Management Action Plans include a testing and measuring protocol that focuses on both the key physical parameter – ensuring that dissolved oxygen levels are sufficient to maintain aerobic conditions throughout the lake – and the key biological parameters related to the phycology, or phytoplankton population dynamics, of your lake.

Our bioaugmentation dosing regimens are designed to manage these factors dynamically and adaptively as remediation takes place, rebalancing the nutrient cycle, promoting the growth of beneficial organisms to restore food web functionality, and suppressing harmful algal blooms.
