Planktonic algae do not form a mass or mats on the surface. They are free-floating microscopic plants that can be found floating on the top few feet of water in ponds or lakes. Planktonic algae requires light so they may produce food by photosynthesis. The algae colors the water in various shades of greens, blue greens and brown. When millions of algae grow in the water, it is referred to as a bloom.
Planktonic algae are important to the aquatic food chain. They also shade areas of water which discourages the establishment of rooted aquatic plants. However, as seen with most aquatic plants, too much Planktonic algae can be the cause of oxygen depletion and lead to fish kills. CLEAN-FLO uses natural non-chemical aeration and bioaugmentation strategies to keep planktonic algae under control, while improving the entire water body.
